PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Northwestern took Rutgers to overtime, falling just short to the Scarlet Knights, 77-73, at the RAC on Sunday night.
Boo Buie led the 'Cats with 19 points in his third career start. Buie hit five shots from beyond the arc, tying his career-high. Jared Jones also turned in a career-high in points, scoring 11 off the bench. Miller Kopp continued his hot offensive streak, scoring 16 points. Kopp has scored 15+ points in seven of his last eight games.
The Wildcats relied on the three-point shot early, scoring nine of their first 11 points from deep. Kopp and Buie both hit three triples each in the first stanza.
Northwestern led 38-27 at the break, shooting 50% from the floor in the first frame. NU hit six triples on 15 attempts. The duo of Buie Kopp led all scorers with 11 points each.
The 'Cats held as large as a 16-point lead in the second half but were unable to hold on down the stretch, allowing Rutgers to tie the game and force overtime. The 'Cats had a chance to win the game in walkoff fashion, but Boo Buie's floater sailed just long.
This was Northwestern's first overtime game since the 2019 Big Ten Tournament. The Scarlet Knights outscored the Wildcats 11-7 to remain undefeated at the RAC despite a very close contest.
The #B1GCats travel back home to take on the Michigan Wolverines at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Wednesday, Feb. 12. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. CT.
