EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern fell 54-79 to the Michigan Wolverines on Wednesday night.
Northwestern opened the game with suffocating defense, holding Michigan scoreless on 0-11 shooting from the floor over the first floor 5:09. Redshirt first-year Ryan Young's nose for the ball was key for the Wildcats during that stretch, bringing down six rebounds in the first 3:43 alone. Young went on to finish with eight rebounds.
Pat Spencer led the offensive charge in the first half with eight points, while first-year Jared Jones ended up with the team lead, putting up a career high 12 points. Wednesday marked Jones' first time scoring double figures in consecutive games after setting his previous career mark of 11 in the last game against Rutgers. Jones also set a new career high in minutes with 20.
Miller Kopp also scored in double digits, his ten points making it 18 games the sophomore has broken that mark this season. Kopp also tied a career high with four assists.
An 11-2 run for the Wildcats midway through the second half cut Michigan's lead to 58-46. The momentum was not enough as Michigan was able to pull away down the stretch to secure the win.
Northwestern is back in action Saturday, Feb. 15 with a morning road game against Penn State. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. CT.
