NORMAN, Okla. – Northwestern swept two matchups vs. Abilene Christian on Saturday in the Courtyard Marriott Tournament hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
The Wildcat pitching turned in two lockdown performances, holding the opposing Wildcats to one run in each of the two games en route to a 5-1 victory in game one and a 10-1 victory in game two.
Kaley Winegarner got the start in the morning matchup and tossed 5.1 innings of one-run ball, striking out three while earning the win to improve to 3-0 on the year. Kenna Wilkey finished the game off, allowing no hits over 1.2 scoreless innings to earn her first save of the season. Wilkey came up in a big spot in the top of the sixth inning, stranding the bases loaded with a strikeout looking.
Maeve Nelson led the offense in game one, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. Nelson put the 'Cats on top early in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to left field and later provided two insurance runs in the sixth inning with a two-run opposite field homer to right field. This marks the second multi-homer game of Nelson's career.
After Abilene Christian evened the score in the top of the third, Angela Zedak quickly broke the tie with a solo homer to center field, the first of her career.
Nikki Cuchran also turned in a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the sixth inning, her second long ball of the weekend.
The offensive momentum carried over in game two, as the 'Cats tallied 10 runs on seven hits, five of which were home runs.
Danielle Williams earned the win in game two, allowing just two hits and no earned runs in 5.0 innings while striking out seven to pick up her second win of the weekend.
The 'Cats wasted no time getting started in the bottom of the first inning as Jordyn Rudd connected on a three-run homer to left field, her second on the year. Later in the inning, Ashley Schultz added to the early lead with an RBI-double, the first RBI of her career.
Holding a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning, Northwestern blew the game open as the Wildcats tallied six runs, five hits and four home runs.
Williams started off the inning with a solo homer to help her own cause in the circle, her second long ball of the weekend. The next at-bat, Schultz continued her stellar game with a solo home run of her own to right-center, the first homer of her career.
The Wildcats weren't finished going back-to-back in the fourth inning, as Zedak later hit her second homer of the day via a three-run homer to extend the lead to 9-1. Moments later, Nelson continued her red-hot weekend as she hit a solo homer to put the finishing touches on the weekend.
Nelson now has three homers and five RBI on the weekend, while Zedak has four RBI on four hits this weekend.
The Wildcats will look to finish the weekend strong tomorrow with a rematch against No. 5 Oklahoma beginning at 5 p.m. CT.
