EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern softball will head back on the road this weekend for the Courtyard Marriott Tournament hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
The Wildcats will take on North Texas and the #5 Sooners on Friday, followed by a matchup with Abilene Christian and two bracket play games over the weekend.
This marks Northwestern's second-straight year competing in Oklahoma during the regular season. Friday's matchup will also mark a rematch of the 2019 NCAA Super Regional between the Wildcats and Sooners.
The 'Cats are coming off a competitive weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic, which included a win over Long Beach State and one-run setbacks to #7 Florida and #2 Washington.
Morgan Newport continued her hot start to her senior campaign at the Mary Nutter Classic. The DeKalb, Ill. native broke a tie in the sixth inning against Long Beach State with her first-career grand slam. She also drove in two with a double earlier in the game to give her a career-high six RBI on the game.
First-year Sydney Supple contributed in a big way against top-tier opponents over the weekend. The pitcher held #2 Washington to just one run over 4.0 IP and only allowed 3 runs in 6.0 IP against #7 Florida, along with securing her first-career win over Long Beach State. She also stood out at the plate, racking up a pair of hits against Washington and recording her first-career RBI vs. Florida.
Nikki Cuchran continued to be a force at the dish, batting .500 (7-for-14) on the weekend with a pair of doubles. The sophomore finished second on the team with a .400 on-base percentage in 2019 and has improved on that with a .449 mark thus far in 2020.
Rachel Lewis and Maeve Nelson displayed their power at the Mary Nutter Classic, both tallying a pair of home runs and 11 total bases on the weekend. Lewis continued her stellar start to her junior campaign and now ranks first in the Big Ten in doubles (6), second in runs per game (1.07), and fourth in homers (4).
Games against Oklahoma this weekend will be live streamed and fans can also follow live updates, as well as the Wildcats' entire 2020 season, on Twitter at @NUSBCats.
