The Wildcats open play on Friday with a 2 p.m. CT matchup against No. 15 Georgia, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday against Kansas and No. 5 Florida State. The 'Cats conclude the weekend on Sunday against Virginia Tech at 11 a.m. CT.
This is the Wildcats' first appearance in the SPC Elite Tournament. They join Minnesota as one of two teams representing the Big Ten.
Northwestern clocked in at No. 21 in this week's NFCA/USA Today Coaches Poll and enters the tournament with a 2-3 record, coming off several tight games in the challenging Kajikawa Classic last weekend. Chicago's Big Ten Team is coming off a 47-13 campaign in 2019 that saw Northwestern earn a Top-16 seed in the NCAA Tournament and win its fifth NCAA Regional title in program history.
Junior Rachel Lewis, a two-time All-Big Ten selection, is off to another strong start this season. Lewis went 5-for-14, including a home run and double, last weekend and leads the team with a 1.169 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) and five stolen bases.
Sophomore catcher Jordyn Rudd is also off to a hot start, leading the team with 11 total bases, including a home run, and a .412 batting average (7-for-17) on the season. Rudd is coming off an impressive rookie campaign, earning All-Big Ten and All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors after leading the Wildcats in batting average (.328), hits (57), RBI (51) and doubles (13).
Last weekend also saw several impressive pitching performances from the #B1GCats. Sophomore Danielle Williams, the reigning NFCA National Freshman of the Year, tossed a complete game in the season opener, retiring 13-of-14 batters to begin the game. Junior Kenna Wilkey threw a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Seattle, while graduate student Kaley Winegarner spun four shutout innings in a win over Portland State.
All games from this the weekend will be live streamed on ESPN3. Fans can follow live updates all weekend, as well as the Wildcats' entire 2020 season, on Twitter at @NUSBCats.
