CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 21 Northwestern dropped an 8-3 decision to No. 15 Georgia to open the ESPN St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Tournament on Friday.
After falling behind early, the Wildcats responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. However a flurry of solo home runs for the Bulldogs, along with a four-run inning in the top of the fifth, proved to be the difference.
Nikki Cuchran put the Wildcats on top in the third inning after driving a full count pitch to the left field fence with the bases loaded to score Gracie Huff and Skyler Shellmyer. Later in the inning, Jordyn Rudd brought home Rachel Lewis via a sacrifice fly for her team-leading sixth RBI of the season.
Lewis finished 1-for-2 on the day with a double, her second of the season, as well as a walk. Also reaching base twice was Morgan Newport, who went 1-for-2 with a walk. Newport also tossed 2.1 innings of relief, allowing two earned runs while striking out one.
Northwestern will be back in action tomorrow with two more games at the SPC Elite. The Wildcats face off against Kansas in the morning at 9:30 a.m. CT before taking on No. 5 Florida State at 1:30 p.m. CT. Fans can stream all the games on ESPN3.
