EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern Golf Health and Performance Specialist Scott Barthlama has been named one of the 50 Best Golf-Fitness Trainers in America by Golf Digest. Barthlama is the only trainer on the list who is a full-time university employee.

"It is an honor to be considered and recognized by Golf Digest on this prestigious list of professionals," said Barthlama. "I am proud of the work we are doing here at Northwestern under the direction of Pat Goss and excited to see what the future holds for the golf programs. I am humbled by this recognition and feel very fortunate to be a part of this program and this amazing staff."

A certified athletic trainer since 1991, Barthlama oversees all aspects of the health and wellness of the men and women's golf programs including strength and conditioning, recovery, heart rate, sleep, nutrition, mindfulness and injury prevention.

"It is a tremendous opportunity for our players to have access to a professional with Scott's expertise," said Director of Golf and Player Development Pat Goss. "He implements comprehensive golf-specific performance plans for each player and works seamlessly with the coaches to incorporate this aspect of their performance into their overall golf development.  We have seen great results from Scott's work."

In November of 2019, Northwestern opened the renovated Gleacher Golf Center. Part of the redesign included the installment of a brand new, state-of-the-art Golf Performance Lab, allowing Barthlama to focus on strengthening and elevating performances on the golf course as well as improving the overall the well-being of Northwestern's men and women's golf student-athletes.

"Scott's role in college golf is unique and greatly benefits our players.  It was such a priority for our programs that building a world-class performance lab under Scott's guidance was paramount in the redesign of the Gleacher Golf Center," Goss added.

Performance plans for each player are created through a process of science-based assessments, performance testing, and biomechanical analysis. He then provides the student-athletes with the most advanced training methods and innovative techniques using golf-specific technology to maximize their performance and health.

Having the golf performance lab located within the Gleacher Golf Center allows student-athletes unprecedented access to Barthlama and constant collaboration with the men and women's golf coaches.

Barthlama re-joined the Northwestern Athletic Department in 2017 when the position of Golf Health and Performance Specialist was created.  He previously worked at Northwestern from 1999-2008 as an athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach for the golf programs, as well as the men's basketball team.  Barthlama then joined the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, where he spent seven seasons.

During his first tenure at NU, the men's team won four Big Ten Championships and qualified for seven NCAA Championships, while advancing to the NCAA Finals four times. The women's program reached the NCAA Regionals seven times during his time in Evanston.  Since returning in 2017, the women's team has made the quarter-finals and finished 12th at the NCAA Championships and the men finished 16th at the NCAA Championships.

Barthlama also worked with many players during their professional careers, including Luke Donald, Tom Johnson, Chris Wilson, Dillon Dougherty, David Merkow, Scott Harrington, Liliana Alvarez and Jenny Lidback.
