EVANSTON, Ill. – Record-setting student-athletes Ryan Lumsden and Yvonne Chart have been selected as Northwestern's 2019 recipients of the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor, the university announced at the annual N Club Induction Banquet. Big Ten schools currently feature more than 8,200 student-athletes, but only 28 earn this award on an annual basis.
Lumsden became the first Northwestern golfer to receive the distinguished Byron Nelson Award, cementing his position as one of the program's elite golfers. He holds the fourth-best career stroke average in Wildcat history, trailing Dylan Wu and former World No. 1 Luke Donald. The London, England native owns two career victories both at the Marquette Intercollegiate during his sophomore and senior seasons and has carded eight career top-five finishes along with two First Team All-Big Ten selections. In 2016, Lumsden entered the Northwestern record book with the ninth best single-season stroke average (71.88) and received his degree in Economics earlier this month.
Chart leaves Northwestern with 167 career wins, the second-most of any senior Wildcat and back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances. A three-time Midwest Fencing Conference Champion and a two time All-American, the foilist was a part of the Wildcats first-ever sweep at the 2019 MFC Championship while also earning the bronze medal. The Truro, England native received her degree from Northwestern in Material Science and Engineering while being awarded Academic All-Big Ten honors her sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their college career. The highest honor that a student competing in conference athletics can achieve in the Big Ten, the award was established in 1915 and was the first award in intercollegiate athletics to demonstrate support for the educational emphasis placed on athletics. During the past century, the Big Ten Medal of Honor has been awarded to more than 1,300 honorees. These individuals have translated their campus experience into success in all walks of life.
Northwestern's past winners include Dan & Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald, current Chicago Cubs pitcher Luke Farrell, former basketball star and current UNICEF Chief Strategy & Engagement Officer Anucha Browne and NFL standout, Justin Jackson.
