5/18/2019 6:42:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
EVANSTON, Ill. – For the first time since 2014, Northwestern is headed to the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Final Four.
A hot start kept the Wildcats' postseason push alive, as No. 4 Northwestern secured a spot in the final four with a 18-14 victory over No. 5 Syracuse in the NCAA quarterfinal.
The Wildcats head to the final four for the 12th time in program history.
Three Wildcats each had three goals, with Lindsey McKone, Selena Lasota Megan Kinna all recording hat tricks. Lasota added a pair of assists while fighting through face-guarding the whole match. Lauren Gilbert, Liza Elder, Claire Quinn, and Elle Hansen each also added a pair of goals.
Brennan Dwyer helped shape the flow of the game, scooping up a game high 10 draw controls.
Senior goal keeper Mallory Weisse recorded a .346 save percentage, stopping eight of the 22 shots on goal she faced. The Northwestern defense held strong in front of her, holding the orange to just 24 shots total.
Northwestern found the net after just 32 seconds, with Megan Kinna getting the scoring started, before the Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Northwestern out shot Syracuse 16-11 in the first half, including an 18 minute stretch where they held Syracuse goalless. Five different Wildcats scored during a 6-0 run as Northwestern lead 10-4 at half.
While the Orange were thunderstruck on the field, lightning began to roll in, causing a two hour delay of the second half. Play resumed in a wet, foggy field, and the Wildcats showed no signs of rolling over. Northwestern peppered the Syracuse net with 17 shots, before winding out the clock on the 18-14 victory.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will face the winner of Maryland vs Denver on May 24th at Homewood Field, with the game broadcast on ESPN3.
