#B1GCats Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals With Win Over Notre Dame

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern opened the NCAA Tournament in style with a 13-10 victory over Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium.
 
The Wildcats never trailed as they grabbed the lead in the first 51 seconds of action, part of a commanding 8-0 run to open the game.
 
The No. 4 overall seed #B1GCats advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament and will face the No. 5 seed Syracuse Orange. This marks the second-straight season the Wildcats have advanced to the quarterfinals.
 
Selena Lasota led the way for the 'Cats' offense, notching five goals, including three in the second half. Izzy Scane scored four goals of her own, marking the eighth game this season she has scored at least four goals.
 
In the net, Mallory Weisse came up with 10 saves, her most in a postseason game since notching 12 against Louisville in the first round of the 2016 tournament. The senior goalkeeper improves to 5-1 this season for the 'Cats.
 
Emily Stein converted on a free position shot just 51 seconds into the game to give the 'Cats a 1-0 advantage. Stein was one of five different Wildcats accounting for the eight goals to open the game, led by two apiece from Scane, Lasota and Lindsey McKone, along with Lauren Gilbert who notched her 50th goal of the season midway through the first period.
 
The Wildcats held the Irish scoreless for the first 21 minutes of action before surrendering two goals to end the first period and enter halftime with a six goal advantage.
 
Notre Dame responded with a 4-1 run to open the second period to narrow the NU lead to 9-6, however the #B1GCats responded with three-straight goals, two from Lasota and one from Scane, to push the lead back up to six.

Scane put the finishing touches on the game with 2:41 remaining as she converted on her fourth goal of the afternoon to extend the Wildcats' lead to 13-9.
