EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern will travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the NCAA Regional Championship, it was announced Wednesday on Golf Channel. The Wildcats will be the ninth-seeded team.
Hosted by Coastal Carolina University and Myrtle Beach Regional Sports Alliance, the regional competition will take place May 13-15. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, played May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The 14-team field at the 6,950-yard, par-72 TPC Myrtle Beach course will include Wake Forest, Cal, Texas Tech, Illinois, Florida State, UNLV, Oregon, Ohio State, Northwestern, Oregon State, Cal Fullerton, and Middle Tennessee, VCU and Robert Morris.
NU has qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the 21st time in Director of Golf and Player Development Pat Goss' 27-year tenure. The 'Cats finished in fourth place last year to advance out of their region in North Arlington, Ohio.
All six regional sites conduct their three-day, 54-hole tournaments concurrently. Other regional tournaments will be hosted in Pullman, Washington; Stanford, California; Simpsonville, Kentucky; Athens, Georgia; and Austin, Texas.
Earlier this month, senior Ryan Lumsden was named the recipient of the 2019 Byron Nelson Award, given to a senior who embodies excellence on and off the course and first-year David Nyfjäll was named the Big Ten Freshman of the year after his standout rookie campaign.
