EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern senior Ryan Lumsden has been named one of 5 finalists for the prestigious Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Byron Nelson Award, as announced by Cleveland Golf/Srixon on Thursday.
Joining Lumsden as nominees for the award are Braden Bailey (Baylor), Nick Ludka (Kalamazoo), Collin Morikawa (Cal) and Brandon Wu (Stanford) .
Candidates for the Byron Nelson Award must be a graduating senior. The selection committee considers equally a nominee's entire collegiate academic and golf career as well as his character and integrity while in college. Particular consideration will be given to a nominee's good citizenship, as portrayed by Mr. Byron Nelson, over the course of his life and golf career.
Lumsden is the fifth golfer from Northwestern to be under consideration for the award. Other finalists include Dylan Wu in 2018, Jack Perry in 2014, Chris Wilson in 2007 and Bjorn Widerstedt in 2003.
As a senior, Lumsden has already cemented his position as one of the elite golfers in Northwestern history. The London, England, native holds the third-best career stroke average in program history at 72.64 with one season remaining, trailing only Dylan Wu and former World No. 1 Luke Donald.
Lumsden qualified for the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills the summer before his senior campaign, becoming the only amateur golfer to advance through the Columbus, Ohio, Sectional Qualifying, finishing tenth at six-under-par. He was the ninth NU Golfer to play in the event in the last 20 years.
Last season, Lumsden paced the 'Cats with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Regionals in Columbus, helping lead the team to a berth in the NCAA Championships.
He holds eight-career top-five finishes including two individual titles at the Marquette Intercollegiate during his sophomore and senior year. In 2016, Lumsden entered the Northwestern record book with the eight best single-season stroke average (71.88).
In each of the past two seasons, Lumsden has been named to First Team All-Big Ten, Division I PING Midwest All-Region Team, received Academic All-Big Ten honors and was named a GCAA All-America Scholar in 2018.
Lumsden and the Wildcats have three tournaments remaining until Big Ten Championships in Philadelphia, April 26-28.
