‘Cats Fall in Overtime at No. 7 Syracuse, 15-14

SYRACUSE, NY. – No. 5 Northwestern and No. 7 Syracuse battled in a top-10 showdown Sunday in the Carrier Dome with the Wildcats suffering their first loss of the season in a thrilling overtime affair, 15-14.  
 
Syracuse took the early lead, scoring 1:24 into the game, but a save by sophomore goalkeeper Julie Krupnick led to senior Nell Copeland's first goal of the season to tie the game. The Wildcats and Orange each added a goal before Syracuse jumped out to a 4-2 lead.

First-year Izzy Scane controlled the next drive from the draw control to score her first goal of the game and cut the deficit to one, 4-3.
 
The Orange answered by going on a 2-0 run before sophomore Taylor Pinzone netted her first goal of the season to bring the score to 6-4. Northwestern and Syracuse went exchanged goals for the next six scores, before senior Selena Lasota scored to cut the deficit to one going into halftime, 9-8.
 
Syracuse scored first coming out of the break, but junior Meghan Duffy responded with her first goal to help the Wildcats respond. A pair of goals by the Orange extended their lead to three, but the 'Cats' offense exploded to take control of the contest.
 
Junior Lindsey McKone ignited a 5-0 run that propelled the 'Cats to their first lead of the day. Goals from sophomore Lauren Gilbert, senior Liza Elder, Lasota, and a second goal from McKone followed to give NU the lead with 7:05 left in the game, 14-12.
 
Syracuse responded with two goals to take the game into overtime, one with just over five minutes and the other with just 25.1 seconds in regulation to send the game to overtime.
 
The Wildcats won the opening draw of the extra session, but the Orange caused a turnover and Emily Hawryschuck found the back of the net with 1:06 left in the first overtime period for the golden goal.
 
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back on the field tomorrow afternoon to take on Canisius at noon CT at the Shalens Sports Complex.
 
Team Notes:
· The Wildcats had four players each with two goals, including Gilbert, Lasota, McKone and Scane. Of the four players, three also had three points, McKone, Gilbert and Lasota. 
 
· The Wildcats had three players with multiple caused turnovers. Jill Girardi tied her career-high with three and Megan Gordon and Carson Copeland each set new career-highs with three and two, respectively. 
 
· Northwestern has three players who have each scored at least one goal in each game so far this season, including Gilbert, McKone and Quinn.
 
Individual Notes:
· Brennan Dwyer and Scane tied for a game-high eight draw controls to bring their totals for the season to 31 and 17, respectively.
 
· Krupnick had a game-high 13 saves, which ranks top-eight all-time among Wildcat performances.
 
· Megan Gordon picked up a career-high seven ground balls, which was also a game high.
