
Northwestern Drops Utah, 10-0, in Five Innings at Mary Nutter

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Northwestern dominated Utah in a 10-0 (5) run-rule shutout, to keep their momentum rolling at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic after game one on Saturday.
The Wildcats moved to 10-2 on the season and 3-0 this weekend in California. It continues their best start to season since 1987, when the team opened up 12-2.
Sophomore Kenna Wilkey earned her second win of the season with five scoreless innings in the circle, allowing just two hits while striking out seven. The 'Cats picked up their second shutout win of the weekend and their fifth of the season.
First years Jordyn Rudd and Maeve Nelson led the Wildcats with their explosive performances behind the plate, both going 1-3 for three RBI. Nelson ended the game with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning while the 'Cats were already up seven.
Senior Lily Novak contributed with two hits, two RBI and a double. First year Nikki Cuchran was the other Wildcat on the day with two hits along wtih an RBI as well.
With her three RBI, Rudd continued to pile onto her already team-high RBI total, which now stands at 17. Rudd smacked her sixth double of the season against Utah, and she also leads the team in doubles
Maeve Nelson's 'walk-off' was her second home-run of the season, and she boosted her RBI total to eight, which ranks second behind Rudd.
Northwestern jumped the Utes out of the gate, putting four on the scoreboard in the first inning. Rachel Lewis had a leadoff walk, and after advancing on a steal and a throw, she scored from third on a groundout from Rudd to make it 1-0.
Cuchran singled and was eventually brought home by a double from Morgan Newport, who notched her fourth RBI of the weekend. After Maeve Nelson walked, Novak smashed in a double into center to clear the bases and give the 'Cats a 4-0 lead.
Wilkey cruised through the next four scoreless innings, allowing just five base runners. The Wildcat bats woke up once more in the fifth as they put the game away.
Lewis and Morgan Nelson reached base and Rudd brought them both in with a double that was a foot away from becoming a home run in deep center. With the score at 6-0, Cuchran singled home Rudd to bring the 'Cats within one run from ending the game.
Newport walked next to put two runners on base for Maeve Nelson, and the first year left no doubt, crushing a home run over the left field fence to make it 10-0.
