CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Northwestern continued its hot stretch at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 2-1 victory over Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-0 after two days of action in the nation's most prestigious non-conference tournament.
Danielle Williams took the circle for the Wildcats and shut down Long Beach State as she hurled her sixth complete game of the season in as many starts and improved to a perfect 9-0–both of which lead the Big Ten. She also drove in the eventual game-winning RBI with a single in the second inning.
The #B1GCats now sit at 11-2 on the season, their best start since opening 12-2 in 1987, and have already secured their most wins at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic since going 5-0 in 2013.
The 'Cats wasted no time getting started as Morgan Nelson launched a solo home run to right center, her second of the season and 25th of her career, to put Northwestern up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats have outscored their opponents 9-1 in the first inning in their four games over the weekend.
Maeve Nelson led off the second inning with a single and, one batter later, scored from first after Williams laced an RBI-single over the shortstop's head in left-center to help her own cause.
Williams was lights out for the rest of the game, as she allowed just four hits while striking out six. She allowed her lone run of the game in the sixth inning, ending a 15.2 scoreless innings streak dating back to last weekend, but then proceeded to strand the potential tying run on third base. The next inning, she retired Long Beach State in order to finish the game off.
Seven different Wildcats accounted for the Wildcats seven total hits. Rachel Lewis, Jordyn Rudd and Skyler Shellmyer all reached base twice, as each tallied a single and a walk on the day.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will look to close out the weekend with a perfect record tomorrow morning as they face off against No. 5 Washington, their first ranked matchup of the season. The action will be streamed online at FloSoftball ($) and @NUSBCats will have live updates on Twitter.
