
Wildcats Fall to No. 5 Washington in Mary Nutter Finale

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Northwestern suffered their first loss at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic to No. 5 Washington, falling 3-1 in the final game on Sunday.
The Wildcats moved to 11-3 on the season and finished the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 4-1 record. The Huskies were the first ranked opponents Northwestern faced in 2019.
Sophomore Rachel Lewis had a hit along with an RBI, driving in the Wildcats' lone run of the day which gave them a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
First year Danielle Williams pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three runs while striking out five in the first loss of her collegiate career. Her record now stands at 9-1 through the first three weeks of the season.
Three Wildcats wrapped up the weekend with five hits total – Maeve Nelson, Jordyn Rudd and Morgan Nelson. Maeve Nelson led the team with five RBI on two doubles and a homerun, while Rudd collected two RBI to improve her season total to a team-high 17.
Junior Morgan Newport had a strong tournament, collecting four RBIs with four hits. The junior now leads the team with a .357 batting average, and her .548 slugging percentage ranks second behind Rudd (.578).
While Williams was handed her first loss against Washington, she still turned in a weekend to remember. She threw 21.2 innings total, posting a 1.29 ERA with a .149 batting average allowed while racking up 22 strikeouts and three wins.
Sophomore Kenna Wilkey picked up a win over the weekend as well and allowed no earned runs in her eight innings in the circle.
The #B1GCats are back in action next weekend with another tournament hosted by Stanford. The 'Cats will play five games against the Cardinal, Cal Poly, North Dakota State and Montana, with two matchups against the Mustangs.
