'Cats Wrap Weekend with 21-20 Win Over Duke

2/17/2019 4:03:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 7 Northwestern scored the final three goals to earn a dramatic come-from-behind victory over No. 24 Duke on Sunday at Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field, 21-20.

The Wildcats (3-0) trailed by a pair of goals with 7:16 to play, 20-18, but held the Blue Devils (2-1) scoreless down the stretch to complete the dramatic comeback.

Junior Lindsey McKone caused a key turnover with 1:19 to play that set up senior Liza Elder's free position that tied the game, 20-20. Sophomore Brennan Dwyer won the ensuing draw control and McKone eventually found herself behind the net where she beat her defender one-on-one to score the game-winning goal with just 25 seconds left.

Dwyer came up clutch yet again by winning her team-high fifth draw control and sophomore Lauren Gilbert, who scored a career-high five goals in the contest, ran out the remaining 16 seconds for the win.

Gilbert leads the 'Cats with 12 goals through three games after scoring just three all of her rookie campaign a year ago. Elder and senior Claire Quinn each had a hat trick in the contest that saw seven Wildcats score two or more goals for the first time since 2011.

The Wildcats jumped out to a quick start with goals from Elder and Jill Girardi within the first minute of play. After back-and-forth action, including a pair of goals from Gilbert, NU held a 6-4 lead 12 minutes into the match.

Duke proceeded to score seven unanswered goals, but the 'Cats fought back. After Elder stopped the Blue Devil run by converting on a free position shot, goals by Kim Harter, Lindsey McKone and Girardi propelled Northwestern into halftime only trailing by two, 12-10.

NU kept their momentum by scoring the first three goals after the break, coming from Megan Kinna, Gilbert, and Quinn. The lead changed hands five times over the next 20 minutes of play, ending with three straight Duke goals to capture a 20-18 lead with 7:16 left to play.

Sophomore defender Ally Palermo led the 'Cats with three ground balls, while first year Izzy Scane stacked the box score with two goals, one assist, four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action on Sunday, February 24 when they travel to Syracuse, New York to take on the No. 15 Syracuse Orange. Opening draw is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
