Wildcats Silence Friars, 72-63, at Welsh-Ryan Arena

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern took down Big East foe Providence Wednesday evening at Welsh-Ryan Arena in a commanding performance at both ends of the floor, winning by a final score of 72-63.
NU shot 49% from the field in the victory, accentuated by a 44% mark from deep. The 'Cats also held the Friars to 31% shooting on the night, including an 8-35 total on three-pointers.
Four Wildcats scored in double-digits in a team effort that also saw five players record at least seven rebounds. Ryan Young led the way with 16 points on 7-9 shooting, also tallying seven boards and three assists in just his second career start. Pete Nance paced the squad with eight boards to go along with his nine points.
Anthony Gaines stuffed the stat sheet with a line of 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Miller Kopp and Pat Spencer added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Northwestern held the lead for over 37 of the 40 minutes in the game, and led by as many as 20 in the second half, while also outpacing the visitors in rebounds, assists and blocks for the game.
Chicago's Big Ten Team got off to a quick start, scoring the first six points of the contest. Anthony Gaines contributed four of those, hitting a pair of free throws and a tough layup in transition.
The 'Cats opened looking strong on the defensive end, holding a 16-15 lead at the midway point of the first half while holding Providence to a 22.2% clip on 4-18 shooting from the field.
Over the remainder of the first period, NU continued its smothering defense while turning it up on the offensive end. The hosts hit four triples, including a pair from Kopp and one each from Robbie Beran and Nance, as they poured in another 24 points en route to mounting a 40-29 lead at the intermission. The total marked Northwestern's first 40-point opening half since the second month of last season, in an 88-46 victory over Chicago State.
Kopp led the Wildcats with 10 points at the break and was followed closely by Gaines with nine, who also led the squad with five rebounds. 11 of the team's 12 field goals were assisted, as Gaines and Spencer led the way with a trio of dishes apiece.
NU continued its scorching-hot shooting as the second half got underway, as Pat Spencer and Gaines hit back-to-back threes before the visitors added to their total. A basket from Ryan Young and another field goal from Spencer opened up a 19-point lead, as the Friars were forced to call a timeout with the score reading 50-31.
Over the next seven minutes, Providence clawed back into the contest as its offense finally found a groove. An 18-5 run cut the lead to six points for the 'Cats as the clock ticked under nine minutes remaining.
Both teams tightened up their defense over the next several minutes, ensuring the game would be decided in the closing stages. Northwestern hung on to a five-point advantage, leading 62-57, as Providence called timeout with 2:58 on the clock.
The opponents traded baskets over the next minute, as NU corralled a rebound with 1:20 left, still up by five. Gaines drew a foul and went to the line, hitting both to increase the Wildcat lead to seven in the final minute.
After a missed Friar three and a Wildcat rebound, the hosts were able to run the clock down under 30 seconds. Four-straight makes from the charity stripe by Spencer and an emphatic dunk from A.J. Turner put the final exclamation point on an impressive win for Chicago's Big Ten Team.
The win moves the 'Cats to 1-1 on the season, while Providence drops to 2-1 for the campaign.
Next up for Northwestern will be a home matchup against Radford on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
