EVANSTON, Ill. - The Wildcats are set to host the Providence Friars for 80's night in Welsh-Ryan Arena on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
The matchup marks the fifth annual Gavitt Tipoff Games, an early season series with matchups between the Big Ten and the BIG EAST. The series is named in honor of BIG EAST founder and basketball visionary Dave Gavitt.
Three Wildcats finished with double-digit scoring performances in the season opener against Merrimack, led by Pete Nance's first career double-double. The sophomore had a career-high 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Wednesday night will be the third meeting between Northwestern and Providence with the first meeting dating back to Dec. 28, 1966 in Madison Square Garden.
STORYLINES:
Free (Throw) Fallin': Sophomore Miller Kopp led the Wildcats with a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The last player to finish perfect from the free throw line with at least five attempts was Anthony Gaines who did so on Mar. 3, 2019 against Illinois. As a team, Northwestern finished 19-for-24 (.792) from the charity stripe.
Let's Hear It For The Boys: Five different players made their Wildcat debut in the season opener against Merrimack, including starters Pat Spencer and Ryan Young as well as true first-years Boo Buie, Robbie Beran and Jared Jones. Spencer finished the game in double-digits with 10 points, five rebounds and two assists, and scored seven straight points for the NU offense early in the second half
Double or Nothing: Pete Nance opened his sophomore campaign with a double-double with a career high 19 points and 12 rebounds. This was Nance's first career double-double, making him the only active Wildcat with one, and the first since Dererk Pardon did so against Ohio State on Mar. 6, 2019.
