EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern opens its 2019 season on the road at Memphis, Sunday Jan.13 at noon to kick off a five-game nonconference road trip.
The Wildcats have their eyes set on returning back to the NCAA Tournament after making six straight appearances from 2012 to 2017. Head Coach Arvid Swan returns all nine players from last year's team, led by junior Dominik Stary, who captured his second career Big Ten Singles championship this past fall.
Swan added two newcomers in the offseason to the squad in Simen Bratholm and Trice Pickens. Pickens was named the 2018 National High School Coaches Association Boy's Tennis Athlete of the Year and won the North Carolina 4A singles championship in his senior season.
Memphis finished last season ranked No. 25 in the country with an 18-6 record. The Tigers made their sixth NCAA Tournament in the last seven years, but dropped a first round decision to South Alabama.
Northwestern won the only meeting between the two programs in 2017 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend opener. Current seniors Ben Vandixhorn and Jason Seidman both won matches against Jan Pallares and Felix Rauch, respectively, who are both still suiting up for the Tigers.
Dominik Stary won a doubles match at No. 2 in that meeting, while junior Chris Ephron and senior Michael Lorenzini competed at No. 3 doubles in an unfinished set.
