MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Northwestern men's tennis opened the 2019 dual season Sunday afternoon with a trip to Memphis, falling 5-2 to the Tigers.
The 'Cats got a win from their top doubles duo, as Nick Brookes and Simen Bratholm took down Oscar Cutting and David Stevenson. The victory gave Bratholm, a true first-year from Oslo, Norway, a win in his first career college match.
The hosts took the other two doubles sets to clinch the first team point of the day.
Dominik Stary also won his match at No. 2 singles, cruising past Jeremy Taylor in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The junior will look to continue his success from the past two years, when he racked up a combined 25 singles wins in duals and was an All-Big Ten selection after both campaigns.
A trio of singles contests went into a deciding third set with the result still yet to be decided. At No. 5, Chris Ephron came away with a hard-fought victory in a tight match against Stevenson. After taking the first set and dropping the second, Ephron took the final frame in a tiebreaker to win 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Memphis came out on top in the other two three-set matches to seal the victory on the afternoon.
Sunday was the first of five duals away from home to start the season for Chicago's Big Ten Team. The Wildcats will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 18, traveling to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. CT.
