EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 16 Northwestern travels to Columbia, Mo. on Thursday to take Missouri at 6:30 p.m., looking to continue its undefeated start to the season.
The Wildcats are 3-0-1 and jumped three spots in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week after beating Iowa State 1-0 and drawing No. 25 West Virginia 0-0 last weekend. Four games is the third-longest unbeaten streak to start the season in program history.
First year goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood was named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week and Co-Freshman of the week for keeping two shutouts, including a ten-save performance against the Mountaineers.
The 'Cats have kept three straight shutouts in a row and are mounting another scoreless streak of 337 minutes and 49 seconds, dating back to the only goal conceded this season in the first matchup against Missouri. The streak is already the tenth-longest in program history. With another 90-minute shutout the streak would climb up to the fifth-longest in program history.
The Wildcats have already had ten different players collect points this season through four games, with no player recording multiple goals or assists. Only senior Brenna Lovera has one of each. The most games it has taken the 'Cats to find a repeat goal-scorer is five, which happened in 2010, and the most goals it has taken is six, which happened in 2013 and 2008.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Missouri is 1-1-1 to start the season with a double-overtime scoreless draw against Big Ten foe Iowa, a 2-1 overtime win against Iowa State, and a 6-0 loss at Colorado. The Wildcats defeated Iowa State 1-0 this past Friday.
The Tigers finished last season 8-12-1 with a 3-7 record in the SEC. They were picked to finish 10th out of 14 teams this year in the SEC by the coaches.
The Tigers have split goalkeeping duties between sophomore Mercedes Sapp and senior Kelsey Dossey. Freshmen Skye Kingsley and Blythe Beldner have the only two goals while the third came via an own goal.
While the Tigers lead the all-time series 4-3-3 against the Wildcats, head coach Michael Moynihan is undefeated in his three games against Mizzou. Last year in Evanston, the Wildcats came from behind to win 2-1 thanks to goals from Marisa Viggiano and Mikayla Hampton.
