Golden Goal Lifts No. 16 'Cats over Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 16 Northwestern knocked off Missouri with a golden goal by sophomore Kylie Fisher Thursday night to extend its season-opening unbeaten streak to five games.
Fisher ripped an stunner in the 94th minute from 25 yards out into the top right corner to move the Wildcats to 4-0-1, the third-longest winning streak to start a season in program history.
First year Mackenzie Wood posted her fourth straight shutout with four saves, and the 'Cats have only allowed one goal in their first five games.
Dating back to the only goal the team allowed against Miami of Ohio in the opener, Northwestern is now sitting on a shutout streak lasting 431:47, the fifth-longest streak in program history.
The 'Cats leapfrogged the next five longest streaks in the record books, including Lauren Clem's in 2014 and Jenna Hascher's in 2013. The top-three streaks have all come with seniors Hannah Davison and Kayla Sharples anchoring the backline, with redshirt-senior Nikia Smith playing in the top-two as well.
The Wildcats have also had six different players score each of the six goals this season, a program record for most goals without a repeat scorer. 11 different players have already registered a point through five games.
Northwestern outshout Missouri 19-13 and took six shots on goal compared to four for the Tigers.
The Wildcats came close to scoring twice in the first half. A shot from sophomore Madi Kennel nine minutes in just clanked off the post, while a Marisa Viggaino effort in the 18th minute clattered off the crossbar, with the rebound coming in too fast to be redirected back on net.
The Wildcats peppered a flurry of shots at the Missouri goal in the second half but efforts from Julietta Thron, Nia Harris and Viggiano were thwarted by the Tigers' keeper. Kennel and Lauren McCaffrey both had shots blocked.
The 'Cats finally got off their mark in overtime. Fisher picked up the ball 30 yards from goal on the left side. The sophomore dribbled in, and uncorked a missile to the side netting of the far corner for her first career goal to win the game in the 94th minute.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action next week with its home opener at Martin Stadium. NU welcomes Loyola Marymount on Thursday, Sept. 6 and Bowling Green on Sunday, Sept. 9.
