’Cats in Second Place After Late Surge at The Goodwin

TEAM STANDINGS | INDIVIDUAL STANDINGS | LIVE SCORING
SAN FRANCISCO — Three Wildcats carded rounds of par or better in the opener of The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park on Thursday afternoon, pushing NU only one stroke off the team lead.
Highlighted by Sam Triplett's 5-under round and Everton Hawkins' 3-under round, Northwestern (-6) trails only the tournament leader, host Stanford (-7).
Senior Dylan Wu (E) utilized a 2-under back nine to record an even-par opening salvo and is tied for 27th.
Triplett's 67 was his second-best round in his four-year Northwestern career, trailing only his 64 in the second round of the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in his sophomore campaign. His result marks the second time in his last three tournaments that he has posted a round of 67 or better.
The Scottsdale, Arizona, native made five birdies and no bogies in his solid 18 holes and is tied for fourth place. His score was his lowest opening-round tally in his NU career.
Hawkins recorded his third-best round of this season — and fourth-best of his career — with his 3-under 68 and is tied for sixth place.
Jeffrey Swegle of Stanford is the individual leader after day one after carding an 8-under 63.
Ryan Lumsden (+2; T61), Pete Griffith (+4; T89), and Harrison Murphy (+7; T119 [individual]) also competed for the 'Cats in the first round.
Northwestern will tee off in the second round of the tournament named after former Wildcat head coach Wally Goodwin starting tomorrow at 10:25 a.m. CT.
