Northwestern Ready for The Goodwin in San Francisco
3/28/2018 11:25:00 AM | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO — After three weeks off, Northwestern men's golf is set for the penultimate regular season tournament of the year: The Goodwin at TPC Harding Park, set for Thursday, March 29 through Saturday, March 31.
LIVE STATISTICS VIA GOLFSTAT | UPDATED SEASON STATISTICS
The Goodwin, now in its 49th edition, is named after former Northwestern and Stanford head golf coach Wally Goodwin.
ABOUT GOODWIN
Wally Goodwin, who coached the Wildcats from 1981 to 1987, helped lift Northwestern golf to national prominence. Between 1967 to 1983, the 'Cats finished last in the conference every year, except 1976 when the university did not field a team.
His squad garnered two third-place conference finishes (1984 and 1986), led in part by Jim Benepe, who, in 1986, earned All-America honors, tied for eighth at the NCAA Championships, tied for first at the Big Ten Championship, and was selected Northwestern's Male Athlete of the Year.
Goodwin developed personal relationships with alumni and successfully recruited players who brought life back to Northwestern golf. He designed a premier collegiate golf tournament sponsored by United Airlines, the Americana. Hosted in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, the event helped to raise money for an improved Northwestern travel schedule.
He also helped to convince local country clubs to allow the team to practice on their exclusive private courses – benefits the Wildcats still reap.
After NU, Goodwin coached at Stanford from 1987-2000, where he won a national title (1994).
KEY DETAILS
The Goodwin was originally called the United States Intercollegiate, prior to 2014.
There will be a double shotgun each round, starting with the morning wave on No. 1 and No. 10 tees at 9:30 a.m. CT and the afternoon group at 2:00 p.m./2:20 p.m. CT.
Northwestern will tee off starting at 3:20 p.m. CT on Thursday from the 10th hole, paired with Colorado and San Francisco.
WU CAN DO IT
Senior Dylan Wu leads Northwestern in nearly every category, including stroke average (71.89), rounds of par or better (8), rounds in the 60s (2), and top-five finishes (2). He won the UNCG/Grandover Collegiate on Oct. 28-29, 2017, his third-ever collegiate individual victory.
He leads all Wildcats with 56 birdies this season and has had his score count in 94.1 percent of Northwestern's rounds this season (14-of-15).
The Medford, Oregon, native has accumulated a 71.68 stroke average in his three-plus years in Evanston, trailing only Luke Donald's 70.95 career mark from 1997 to 2001.
WILD FOR WINS
The Wildcats have already won two team titles (Windon Memorial Classic and UNCG/Grandover Collegiate), marking its second-straight season in which NU has won at least two team titles.
WHO'S THERE?
Twenty-five teams and four individuals will compete in the 54-hole stroke play event. The field includes seven top-30 teams and 12 top-50 squads.
The complete team entry list is as follows: Abilene Christian, No. 22 Arizona State, No. 32 BYU, No. 11 Cal, Cal Poly, No. 48 Colorado, Minnesota, Nevada, Northern Colorado, No. 46 Northwestern, No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 30 Oregon, Oregon State, No. 50 San Francisco, San Jose State, SMU, Sonoma State, No. 20 Stanford, No. 45 St. Mary's, UC Davis, No. 16 USC, No. 24 UNLV, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
WHO'S STARTING?
The Wildcats are sending out Sam Triplett, Ryan Lumsden, Dylan Wu, Everton Hawkins, and Pete Griffith to The Goodwin. First-year Harrison Murphy will be entered as an individual competitor.
For Griffith, it will be his first start since the Southwestern Jones Invitational in February 2016.
RECENT HISTORY
Northwestern did not play at The Goodwin last season, but did during the 2015-16 campaign. Played at the Stanford Golf Course, NU came in eighth place out of 26 teams, led by a +1 performance by Dylan Wu, who tied for 13th place.
HARDY HAR HAR
Named after U.S. President Warren G. Harding, TPC Harding Park was opened on July 18, 1925 along the shores of Lake Merced, in San Francisco's southwest corner. It will play as a par-71, 7,143-yard course for the event.
In recent years, TPC Harding Park has played host to the 2015 WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship; the Charles Schwab Cub Championship in 2010, 2011, and 2013; and the 2005 World Golf Championships-American Express Championship.
In 2020, TPC Harding Park will host the PGA Championship, the last of the four major championships. In 2025, the Presidents Cup will return.
