Northwestern Tops Nebraska In Day One of Big Ten Match Play

PALM COAST, Fla. — Northwestern split their two matches on the opening day of the 2018 Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach.
NU started the day with a 4-2 win over Nebraska, including victories by Dylan Wu, Ryan Lumsden, Sam Triplett, and Eric McIntosh.
McIntosh, participating in his first-ever collegiate match play competition, dominated his opponent, Daniel Pearson, to the tune of a 6&4 victory. Lumsden was not far behind, winning, 5&4, over Jackson Wendling.
Wu won, 4&2, in the No. 1 match against Jace Guthmiller, while Triplett rounded out the NU winning with a 3&1 victory.
In the second match of the day, Northwestern and Wisconsin played to a 3-3 tie, with Lumsden, Triplett, and McIntosh notching the Wildcat wins. The tiebreaking criteria of "total holes won" was held by Wisconsin (10 to 9), giving the Badgers the final edge.
Triplett took care of his opponent, thanks to winning five of his first six holes. He ended up with a 4&2 victory. Lumsden topped Griffin Barela, 3&2, while Eric McIntosh beat Eddie Wadja, 2-up.
NU will play top-seeded Illinois in the third round Saturday morning at 7 a.m. CT. The final round will take place at 12:30 p.m. CT.
