Wildcats Head to Kansas for Weekend Series

2/22/2018 8:34:00 AM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern travels to Lawrence, Kansas, this weekend to battle the Jayhawks in a three-game set.

The series begins Friday, Feb.22, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. CT at Hoglund Ballpark. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT, and the two teams will close out the series Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

Fans can follow the series by tuning into WatchESPN or by listening via WNUR Sports.

LAST TIME OUT
After dropping the first two games of the series versus Nebraska-Omaha last weekend, the Wildcats picked up their first win of the season in the concluding game of the series, 3-1. Due to travel delays, the series that had been scheduled for four games was shortened to three.

WEEKEND ARMS
Associate head coach Josh Reynolds has tabbed first-year LHP Quinn Lavelle (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to start Friday night, before turning the ball to sophomore RHP Hank Christie (0-1, 16.20 ERA) on Saturday and junior Danny Katz (0-0, 1.80 ERA) on Sunday.

STARTING STRONG
Junior  Ben Dickey did well to establish an offensive identity for the 'Cats, hitting .364 in the series as well as stealing three bases. Classmate Jack Dunn added to the offensive force, hitting .333 himself on top of three more stolen bases. Willie Bourbon provided the power, tallying one home run, one triple and one double in the series, totaling three RBI.

FABULOUS FIRST-YEARS
David Dunn and Lavelle highlighted a class of first-years that showed that they are ready to contribute at a high level for a team that is hungry to repeat the success of 2017. Dunn hit .272 and scored four runs in the series while Lavelle pitched five scoreless innings in the Wildcats win in the final game. Fellow first-year Jack Pagliarini pitched in relief in the win, only allowing one run in 3.2 innings and striking out six.

THE OPPONENT
After finishing the 2017 campaign with a 30-28 overall record, Kansas began the 2018 season by winning two of its first three matchups at home against Murray State. KU is in the midst of opening its season on a nine-game homestand, with a three-game series versus Texas Southern following the series with Chicago's Big Ten Team. The last time that Northwestern and Kansas matched up was in May 2015 in Evanston, where Kansas defeated the 'Cats in both games of the series.

COMING UP
Following the trip to Lawrence, Northwestern will travel to Austin for a three-game weekend series at Texas. The Wildcats do not play a home game until March 10, when they host Mac Murray College and then Judson on March 11.
