Wildcats Drop Series Opener to Jayhawks
2/23/2018 6:31:00 PM | Baseball
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Northwestern cut into Kansas' four-run lead in the top of the sixth by plating a pair, but it was not enough as the Jayhawks held on to take game one of the series, 4-2, Friday night.
Connor Lind led the way at the plate with a pair of singles, while Willie Bourbon went 1-for-2 with a RBI. Ben Dickey and Alex Erro each recorded a run.
Quinn Lavelle (1-1) earned the start and went 4.2 with four strikeouts. He was credited with the loss. The #B1GCats bullpen of JR Reimer, Tyler Lass and Richard Fordon combined to throw 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Fordon fanned four of the five batters he faced.
Northwestern was done in by the long ball as Kansas scored its first three runs of the game via a solo shot in the bottom of the first and a two-run blast in the fourth, before adding an additional run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-0.
The Wildcats got the offense going in the top of the sixth when Dickey singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Erro singled to the right side and a throwing error allowed Dickey to score from second and Erro advance to second. Bourbon hammered a liner to center field in the ensuing at-bat to score Erro and make it a 2-0 ballgame.
Northwestern left eight runners on base.
The Wildcats and Jayhawks will be back on the diamond tomorrow for game two of the series at 2 p.m. CT.
