Clean Sweep! Lumsden, ’Cats Win Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills

ERIN, Wis. — A torrid day on the course for Northwestern and senior Ryan Lumsden delivered two championships for the Wildcats on Tuesday, the final round of competition of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills.

FINAL SCORES 
 
Lumsden tallied a 54-hole score of an 8-under 208 (73-68-67) at the site of the 117th U.S. Open, topping second-place Alex del Rey (Arizona State) by one stroke. He utilized a final-round 67 — including five birdies and no bogeys in his last 14 holes — to catapult himself to his second-ever individual title.
 
The London, England, native earned his previous individual championship also at the Marquette Intercollegiate, in 2016 as a sophomore.
 
Northwestern had a hard-charging final day, finishing with a 12-under final-round total of 276, the best for any team in the tournament, and tied for the 12th-best 18-hole round in program history.
 
The Wildcats topped second-place Arizona State by two strokes.
 
All five NU golfers in the starting lineup finished in the top-25, highlighted by three top-10 finishes.
 
Sophomore Eric McIntosh and first-year Lucas Becht both finished with their first top-10 finishes in their collegiate career.
 
McIntosh had a 3-under 69 in the final round, finishing 1-over. Becht started the tournament with a 4-under 68, and was 1-over on Tuesday.
 
Junior Everton Hawkins tied for 16th place at 3-over and was 2-under in the final round. First-year David Nyfjäll had a remarkable eight birdies in his last round — including five-straight from holes 12 to 16 — and finished tied for 25th at 5-over. He was 2-under on Tuesday.
 
Senior Pete Griffith, entered as an individual, was tied for 54th at 13-over.
 
As a team, Northwestern amassed 55 birdies, a field-best. Lumsden also paced the field with 16 birdies of his own.
 
Northwestern is back in action on October 14-15 at the Chatham Hills Collegiate in Westfield, Indiana.
