WESTFIELD, Ind. — In only his third collegiate event, first-year David Nyfjäll earned his first individual championship with an 11-under performance at the Chatham Hills Collegiate at The Club at Chatham Hills.
Chatham Hills Final Stats
The two-day stint in Indiana was a record-setting one for the Northwestern squad that finished in second place, trailing only the hard-charging champion Purdue by two strokes.
The Wildcats' 16-under output (848) was tied for the 11th-lowest team tournament round since at least 1998, while Nyfjäll's 54-hole score of 205 is tied for the ninth-best individual total in program history since at least 1990 and the second-best all-time by a rookie. His opening-round 65 is tied for the 10th-lowest individual round in Northwestern history.
Nyfjäll's win in only his third collegiate event is a rapid achievement for the rookie, as, in recent years, Wildcat standouts Dylan Wu and Matt Fitzpatrick both took four events to notch their first titlist honor.
Three 'Cats finished the event in the top-15, led by sophomore Eric McIntosh's career-best sixth-place finish. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native carded a 3-under 213, highlighted by a final-round 69.
Junior Everton Hawkins picked up his second-straight top-20 finish with a tie for 12th place. He rounded out the two-day event with a 2-under 214 total, starting with a 2-under 70.
Senior Ryan Lumsden tied for 22nd with a 1-over 217, while first-year Lucas Becht tied for 37th at 7-over. Individual Harrison Murphy tied for 48th (+12).
As a team, Northwestern was 33-under on par fives, averaging a 4.45 stroke average on the holes. Over the tournament, NU paced the field with 65 birdies and four eagles.
The Wildcats wrap up their fall schedule on Oct. 27-28 at the UNCG/Grandover Collegiate in Greensboro, North Carolina.
