No. 25 'Cats Rally To Finish Off Hoosiers

10/11/2018 9:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – Goals from Brenna Lovera and Nia Harris helped No. 25 Northwestern rally from behind to overcome Indiana, 2-1, Thursday night at Martin Stadium.

The Wildcats improved to 9-4-2 on the season and 3-4-1 in the Big Ten, while also jumping to 5-1 at Martin Stadium. Indiana falls to 7-6-2 and 3-5 in the Big Ten.

Senior Brenna Lovera and sophomore Nia Harris recorded goals for the 'Cats, while first year Julietta Thron and sophomore Regan Steigleder each notched an assist.

Lovera's goal was the 18th of her career, tying her for ninth on the Northwestern all-time list. The score was also her seventh in 2018, marking her career-high for goals in a season.

The 'Cats spent most of the first half playing from behind. Junior Allison Jorden struck first for Indiana in the 20th minute off a set piece from sophomore Hanna Németh.

The Wildcats tried to respond, but senior Kayla Sharples' shot was knocked out of bounds on a great save by Bethany Kopel.

With Indiana back on the offensive, first year Mackenzie Wood kept Northwestern within striking distance when she made a diving save to send an Indiana shot out of bounds.

Lovera put the 'Cats on the board in the 42nd minute, connecting on a pass from Thron in the middle of the penalty box, and poking past the goalkeeper to make it 1-1

Indiana had an opportunity to take the lead with a penalty kick to start the second half, but first year Mackenzie Wood made an incredible diving save in mid-air to keep the score tied.

Northwestern gained the momentum after the save and applied the pressure. Steigleder sailed a ball into the box from the left sideline. Harris awaited the deflection off of Kopel's hands and darted the ball the ball off the left crossbar and into the net to put the 'Cats up for good.

Northwestern returns to Martin Stadium for the second match of a three game home stand this Sunday, October 14th to face Purdue at 2:30 p.m.
