#B1GCats Battle to Stalemate With Purdue on Senior Day

10/14/2018 8:01:00 PM | Women's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 25 Northwestern battled to a 0-0 draw with Purdue on Senior Day after double overtime at Martin Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Wildcat defense posted its conference-best eighth shutout and first year Mackenzie Wood made eight saves, her second highest total of the season.

The Wildcats moved to 9-4-3 overall and 3-4-2 in the Big Ten, while Purdue's pushed their overall record to 6-6-4 and 1-5-3 in conference. Through nine games, Northwestern sits in ninth place in the Big Ten with 11 points with two games to play.

Northwestern also honored its 11-member senior class, which will depart as the winningest class in program history. For a recap of the Senior Day ceremony, click here

Senior Nikia Smith started on her senior day for the first time since Sept. 16 when she sustained an injury against Minnesota.

Northwestern fired eight goals at the Purdue defense with four of them coming on goal. Seniors Hannah Davison and Brenna Lovera had the best chances for the 'Cats coming late in the second half.

Neither team had many good looks at goal in the first 45 minutes, outside of a Davison header on a corner kick that stayed wide of the post on a tough angle.

The second half heated up with 20 minutes to go, as Mackenzie Wood tipped a save over the bar, made a double save in the box, and parried away a bicycle kick attempt from the Boilermakers.

In the 85th minute, the 'Cats had a golden opportunity on a corner kick when a loose ball fell to Davison. The senior belted it towards the corner but a Purdue defender cleared the ball off the goal line.

With the clock ticking towards zero in regulation, the 'Cats nearly snatched away the victory once again. Lovera latched onto the ball in the box and as she was falling down with four seconds left, she sprayed her shot a foot wide of the post.

Both overtime periods were rather tame as both teams were fatigued, with Purdue taking a strong shot from distance that Wood parried over the bar.

Chicago's Big Ten Team wraps up its regular season this week when it hosts rival Illinois on Thursday night for a Think Pink game before traveling to Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 21.
