Northwestern Narrowly Edged by No. 2 Duke, 1-0

9/3/2017 11:44:00 AM | Field Hockey

LANCASTER, Pa. -- No. 14 Northwestern gave second-ranked Duke all it could handle but a first-half goal by the Blue Devils was the difference in their 1-0 win at Spooky Nook Sports on Sunday.

Duke (3-0) finished with a 16-13 edge in shots while both teams had six penalty corners.

"We battled today and we didn't get the result we wanted but we played hard for 70 minutes," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "We had our chances and just didn't put the ball away. We gained great experience from this road trip and can't wait for our home opener next weekend."

The lone tally of the match came 14 minutes in when Erin Scherrer scored off a rebound to give the Blue Devils a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Wildcats managed six shots on goal in the contest but never were able to get one past Sammi Steele who is yet to allow an opposing team to score this season.

Meanwhile, Annie Kalfas was stellar in goal for Northwestern once again, making nine saves to give the Wildcats a chance to pull off the upset. Kalfas was coming off a career-best 13-save performance against Boston College on Friday.

Puck Pentenga recorded seven shots for NU, including three on goal.

Northwestern (2-3) finally returns home following its season-opening five-match road trip. The Wildcats take on Temple in its home-opener 1 p.m. Friday at Lakeside Field.
