Pentenga posts a goal and two assists
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Eight different Wildcats scored as No. 14 Northwestern opened its 2017 home schedule in style Friday afternoon with a resounding 9-1 win over Temple at Lakeside Field.
Saar de Breij was the lone NU player to score multiple goals as she tallied two in the opening half for Northwestern (3-3). The goal total was NU's highest since a 9-3 victory over Dartmouth on Sept. 5, 2014 and largest margin of victory since an 8-0 win at Central Michigan Oct. 23 of last season.
The 'Cats jumped right on the Owls with de Breij scoring on a deflection off Puck Pentenga's hit from the top of the circle off a penalty corner at 1:58. NU maintained the one-goal lead until Pentenga scored her second of the year at 17:58, entering the from the top of the circle before firing a rocket past Maddie Lilliock.
The floodgates opened from there. de Breij notched her second goal of the match at 20:12 as Lakin Barry made a terrific end line move and found de Breij all alone at the goal line for the tap in.
The advantage grew to four at 27:57 when NU tallied its second goal off a corner as Kirsten Mansfield tapped home a feed from Pentenga. The third goal off a set piece came with just 1:23 left in the opening half when Elena Curley blasted a shot home off a corner that gave the hosts a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Temple would get a goal back just over three minutes into the second stanza when Rachael Mueller was able to loft a shot under the crossbar.
However, the rest of the match belonged to Northwestern with three Wildcats scoring their first collegiate goal. NU was awarded a penalty stroke at 41:21 and Erica Hootstein converted for her first score as a Wildcat to make it 6-1.
The 'Cats scored off yet another corner at 61:42 when Kaitlin Wood knocked in an unassisted goal before Mackenzie Keegan put home a second penalty stroke goal for her second score of the year a little under a minute later.
Whitney Williamson finished off the scoring at 68:22 with her first goal at Northwestern, completing a great re-direct off a sweet feed from Wood.
All three of NU's goalkeepers saw playing time with Annie Kalfas earning the win thanks to a scoreless opening half. Florien Marcussen and Caroline Hughes – who made her Northwestern debut – also saw time in goal.
The Wildcats return to action at 12:30 p.m. Sunday when they host Kent State at Lakeside Field.
