EVANSTON, Ill. — The Northwestern men's golf team heads to Erin, Wisconsin, for the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills, teeing off Sunday.
Erin Hills, the site of the 2017 U.S. Open and the 2011 U.S. Amateur, previously hosted Northwestern in 2014, when the Wildcats finished in fourth place. Then first-year Dylan Wu fired a 75-73-70=218 (+2) to finish tied for seventh among the tough competition.
Northwestern won the Marquette Intercollegiate last season, held at Milwaukee Country Club.
STARTING V (+1)
The #B1GCats will send out Dylan Wu, Ryan Lumsden, Eric McIntosh, Sam Triplett, and Everton Hawkins. Junior Luke Miller will compete as an individual.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Out of the 15 participating schools, three teams are ranked in the most recent GCAA Coaches Poll (No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 22 Marquette, and No. 24 Florida State). Five other schools — Northwestern, Michigan State, Ole Miss, USF, and UCLA — are receiving votes.
DYNAMIC DUO
Lumsden and Wu were the first pair of Northwestern teammates to receive All-Big Ten First Team honors (in 2016-17) in the same season since Nick Losole and Jack Perry did so in 2013. It marked the fifth time since 2000 that multiple Wildcats earned All-Big Ten Selections in the same year.
LET ME COUNT THE WAYS
Wu was a team leader in a multitude of categories in 2016-17, including scoring average (70.53), rounds of par or better (23), rounds in the 60s (12), top-five finishes (5), top-10 finishes (9), top-25 finishes (11), birdies (115), and low round (66). He was named a Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award semifinalist after the conclusion of the season.
HOT START FOR MCINTOSH
First year Eric McIntosh made three birdies in the first five holes of his second-round performance at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational. He finished with a 1-under 69 on the day, the best round of his young Wildcat career.
NICE WEATHER AHEAD
Friday calls for a sunny forecast with a high of 63. Saturday will be partly cloudy with a high of 68 and a wind to the south at 12 mph. Sunday calls for partly cloudy skies with a high of 78 and a wind to the south at 13 mph. The final day will again consist of partly cloudy skies and a high of 83, with wind to the south at 12 mph.
