COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kayla Sharples' goal in the 37th minute led Northwestern to a 1-0 shutout victory over Ohio State on Sunday, the Wildcats' second win ever in Columbus.
Northwestern beat Ohio State on the road for the first time since 2006 and the first time overall since 2007. The 2017 version of Ohio State is receiving votes this week in the United Soccer Coaches' top-25 poll.
The Wildcats improved to 4-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big Ten.
The junior defender Sharples' third goal of the season came off a corner kick from junior midfielder Marisa Viggiano. That connection has become a staple of Northwestern's set piece offense, as Sunday's goal marked the third connection between the two this season.
Viggiano's ninth career assist puts her one shy of cracking the top-10 all-time at Northwestern.
The defense came to play, holding the top-scoring offense in the Big Ten to just three shots on goal en route to the team's third shutout of the season and the first since holding Illinois State scoreless on Aug. 20.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem secured her 40th career shutout, extending her program record and moving her into a tie for 13th in NCAA history. Clem had three saves, bringing her career total to 291. She ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 39 saves in 2017.
Clem started her 75th straight contest, tying her for seventh all-time at NU with Tori Bohannon (2003-06) and Carolyn Hack (2001-04). The program record is 79, set by Jenny Dunn (2005-08).
The 'Cats took nine shots, including four that were on target. Junior midfielder Maria Fayeulle led the way with three attempts, while six others took one shot apiece.
Northwestern outshot Ohio State 7-1 in the first 45 minutes, including all four of the team's shots on goal for the match compared to none for the Buckeyes.
Sunday's 1-0 decision marked the first win over a team in the top-25 or receiving votes since a 1-0 victory over No. 19 Michigan on Oct. 9 last season.
Chicago's Big Ten Team returns home to Martin Stadium next weekend for matches against No. 13 Rutgers on Friday at 7 p.m. and Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m.
