EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern earned a hard-fought point against No. 12 Rutgers Friday night at Martin Stadium, playing the Scarlet Knights to a 0-0 draw while effectively dominating the match.
The Wildcats outshot their opponents, 13-6, and controlled the majority of the possession but could not find the back of the net with their five shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Clem recorded her 41st career shutout, moving her into a tie for 11th in NCAA history, and her second in a row. She notched three saves in the game, bringing her total on the season to 42.
The NU defense put up a staunch effort as well and held Rutgers to just six shots. The back line secured its fourth shutout of the season.
Rutgers, now 7-0-2, dropped two points for only the second time this season, while the 'Cats moved to 4-4-2 (1-1-1) three matches into Big Ten play.
Chicago's Big Ten Team started the game on the front foot and kept the ball in the visitors half for most of the first period. First year midfielder Madi Kennel had the first chance of the match with a great opportunity from the top of the box in the 25th minute, but Rutgers' goalkeeper Casey Murphy made the stop.
Northwestern's next opportunities came in the 35th and 36th minute, when the 'Cats capitalized on two Marisa Viggiano corners by putting them both on goal. Despite outshooting the Scarlet Knights 6-3 for the first 45 minutes, the match went into the half scoreless.
The Wildcats came out swinging again in the second half. Viggiano forced a tough save from Murphy with a shot from distance, but the match remained scoreless.
The best chance of the night came in the 76th minute when Grace Orndorff picked up a rebound off a corner kick and fired a strike towards the top corner that Murphy parried over the bar with a reaction save.
The 'Cats had their sixth corner in the 88th minute of regulation, but Hannah Davison's header sailed wide as the game eventually progressed to overtime.
Rutgers' best, and last, shot of the game came in the second half of overtime. Sophomore forward Carina Hendley found herself behind the 'Cats back line one-on-one with Lauren Clem, but the defending Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year forcefully collected the ball and stonewalled the Scarlet Knights' attack.
