EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern looks to ride the momentum of its defeat of Ohio State against Rutgers at 7 p.m. on Friday and against Maryland at 1 p.m. on Sunday, both at Martin Stadium.
The #B1GCats [4-4-1] are coming off a 1-0 victory against the (rv) Buckeyes. It was just the second time the 'Cats picked up a win in Columbus, and the first in 11 years.
No. 12 Rutgers enters with a 7-0-1 record, coming off a 2-0 victory against Maryland. Maryland currently holds a 6-1-1 record, with its sole loss to Rutgers. The Terrapins face Illinois on Friday in Champaign before coming to Evanston on Sunday.
It's a weekend of giveaways at Martin Stadium. The first 150 students to the match on Friday will receive a Northwestern Soccer scarf. For Sunday's game, fidget spinners will be given to the first 100 students.
SERIES HISTORY
The all-time series between Northwestern and Rutgers is tied at two apiece. The teams first met in 2014, a 1-0 Northwestern win over then-No. 14 Rutgers. In fact, Rutgers has been a top-25 team every time the squads have played in the regular season. The last meeting was a 1-0 Scarlet Knight win in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament last season. Against Maryland, the Wildcats hold a 2-0-1 series record, winning last year's match by a score of 4-1.
SET PIECE SPECIALIST
Junior defender Kayla Sharples scored her third goal of the season on Sunday at Ohio State on a corner kick in the 37th minute. Each of her three goals this year have come off set pieces as she rises high above the defense to head the ball into the back of the net. The goal at OSU was Sharples' sixth of her career, all coming as a defender. Each of her goals have come since the start of 2016, and she has been the Wildcats' third top goal scorer in that time span.
CAN'T SCORE ON CLEM
Lauren Clem holds the Northwestern program record for career shutouts with 40, tallying her most recent last week against Ohio State. She is tied for 13th in NCAA history and continues to climb the ranks. The all-time NCAA record is 55, set by Katelyn Rowland (UCLA) from 2011-14.
