Lumsden Leads Way in Day One of NCAA Regionals

BATON ROUGE, La. — Sophomore Ryan Lumsden continued his strong ways for Northwestern men's golf with an even 72 in the first round of the NCAA Regionals at the University Club at Baton Rouge.
The London, England, native made par in each of his first 10 holes on a sweltering, upper 80-degree day in southern Louisiana. He bogeyed No. 2 — his 11th hole of the day — and birdied No. 9 to finish with par.
Monday's round was the fourth-straight at or under par for the First Team All-Big Ten honoree. Eight of his 16 rounds in the spring season have been at or under par.
Lumsden was incredibly resilient over the the day, refusing to let potentially dangerous situations harm his score. His 16 pars were tied with Georgia State's Nick Budd for the most on the day.
He is tied for 11th place after 18 holes.
Redshirt senior Andrew Whalen came out steady by making par on his first eight holes and closed out with a pair of birdies on his last four holes, including the eighth hole in which he hit 6-iron from 200 feet to within five feet and converted for birdie.
The Ephrata, Washington, native carded a 2-over 74 in the first round of his fourth and final NCAA Regionals. He is tied for 22nd.
Freshman Everton Hawkins' first-ever round at regionals was highlighted by back-to-back-to-back birdies after the turn on the first, second, and third holes.
His birdie on third hole was one of a handful on par fives on the day for the Wildcats, who were -2 on the day on such holes. That mark was top-five among all teams.
Dylan Wu (+5) and Conor Richardson (+7) wrapped up the group of golfers for the Wildcats.
Northwestern is tied for eighth place after day one.
The 'Cats will be paired with Arkansas and Jacksonville State and will tee off from the 10th hole starting at 8:00 a.m. CT on Tuesday. Times are as follows: Conor Richardson (8:00 a.m.), Dylan Wu (8:11 a.m.), Everton Hawkins (8:22 a.m.), Andrew Whalen (8:33 a.m.), and Ryan Lumsden (8:44 a.m.).
