Lawrence Leads Northwestern Past Hawkeyes

EVANSTON, Ill. – Freshman Sam Lawrence tossed 5.0 scoreless innings of relief to propel Northwestern to a 7-5 win over Iowa Saturday afternoon at Miller Park.

The left-hander only allowed two hits and struck out a pair.

Joe Hoscheit paced the 'Cats offensively with two hits and two RBIs, while Leo Kaplan added two hits and a RBI in his fourth start of the season.

Northwestern evened the series with Iowa and earned its first Big Ten win of the season while improving to 9-20.

Hank Christie started on the mound for Northwestern. He pitched 5.0 innings and allowed five runs while striking out four.

Iowa opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a two-run home run from Tyler Cropley, but Northwestern would answer with five runs in the bottom of the third.

The Wildcats loaded the bases in the bottom of the third before an error scored Kaplan. Matt Hopfner earned a walk on the next at bat to tie the game at 2-2. With the bases still loaded, Hoscheit cracked a double to the left field wall that scored Jack Dunn and Alex Erro. Connor Lind brought in Hopfner with a ground ball to give the Wildcats a 5-2 lead.

The Hawkeyes nicked a run back in the fourth before first baseman Jake Adams sent a two-run home run to left field to knot the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning.

Northwestern retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases again. Kaplan smashed a ball to the left field fence to bring in the go-ahead run. Ben Dickey laced a single through the left side to score Lind and make it 7-5.

The #B1GCats are back in action tomorrow for the rubber match of the series against Iowa at 1 p.m. CT at Miller Park.
