EVANSTON, Ill. — The bottom of the order was Northwestern's catalyst, as Leo Kaplan, Jake Schieber, and Ben Dickey combined to reach base seven times and drove in four as Northwestern completed a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes.
This was the third time in nine days that Northwestern (10-20, 2-4 B1G) has come back from a 5-0 deficit to win, and the second game in a row they've done so against Iowa (19-11, 3-3 B1G). This was also the first Northwestern series win over Iowa since 2013, as well as the first-time
Northwestern has won four of five at home since a stretch in 2013 that started with that same Iowa series.
Matt Gannon got the start for Northwestern and the lefty freshman finished with one strikeout in 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
After Iowa's hot start put the Hawkeyes ahead 5-0, the 'Cats looked to cause trouble in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs. Kaplan ripped a bounding ball past the third baseman for a two-run double, pulling Northwestern back to 5-2. Dickey followed with a single to center, plating two more and cutting the deficit to just one run.
The Wildcats looked to repeat the scoring in the fifth and again loaded the bases with the first three batters. Connor Lind bounded a ball to short, with Dunn scoring and tying the game on the double play.
The middle innings continued to be fruitful for Northwestern, with Schieber getting on and advancing to third on a Dickey double. Alex Erro singled to right, and Northwestern had a 6-5 lead.
Northwestern's bullpen continued a stellar weekend. Josh Levy was the first out of the pen. The freshman struck out one in 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Pete Hofman then came in to make the three-inning save, his first save of the season. The senior allowed just two hits over three innings, while recording three strikeouts. When a Wildcat reliever has begun an inning on the mound, Northwestern has now thrown ten consecutive scoreless innings.
Northwestern returns to action at Miller Park on Tuesday, April 11, hosting Western Michigan at 3:30 p.m. CT.
