#B1GCats Tee Off Spring Friday At B1G Match Play Championship

PALM COAST, Florida -- Head coach David Inglis' Wildcats tee off the spring campaign at the Big Ten Match Play Championship on Friday, Feb. 10, at Hammock Beach Resort. Northwestern is a league-best three-time champion of the event.
LIVE LEADERBOARD (via GolfStat)
Northwestern has been a dominant presence in the Championship, compiling a 24-5 all-time record with three-straight crowns from 2010-12 and a runner-up finish last spring on this same Conservatory Course.
Ranked third (according to Golfstat) entering the competition, Northwestern received a bye into Friday's quarterfinal round and will face the winner of the morning's matchup between Ohio State and Rutgers. The Wildcats quarterfinal lineup features junior Dylan Wu, sophomore Ryan Lumsden, senior Andrew Whalen, freshman Everton Hawkins, junior Sam Triplett and senior Conor Richardson. The tournament format affords Inglis the opportunity to adjust his lineup after each match, with sophomores Pete Griffith and Luke Miller waiting in reserve this weekend.
The event was created as a chance for the Big Ten schools to compete in an early-season competition in warm weather, before the regular stroke play season. With the NCAA Championship format changing to match play for the final eight teams, it has become a valuable opportunity for head-to-head experience before the year's ultimate event.
"It's something you have to prepare for, because it is a little bit different, the strategy changes," said Inglis. "It's not about maximizing score, it's about beating your opponent. Sometimes you have to be more aggressive, because your playing partner's hit a good shot, and a par's no good, you need to make birdie. There's other times where they're in trouble, and a par or bogey is going to get the job done and win the hole. You have to be more flexible with your strategy, and just play the opponent. For me that's kind of the purest form of competition in golf. Head-to-head, one-on-one."
It's a form of competition that the Wildcats look forward to.
"Collectively, as a team, they've all embraced it," the head coach continued. "They all look forward to it, it's all they've been talking about for the last week in practice. To lose in the final match to Michigan State last year stung a little bit. I think they've all set their sights on winning. We feel like if we go down there and play well, we can beat anyone."
The Hammock Beach Resort Conservatory Course was designed by Tom Watson and is the longest and most-challenging course in the state of Florida. This breathtaking course is highlighted by waterfalls, babbling brooks and veneered field stone work. With a nod to his affinity for British links-style golf, Watson also added three sod-faced bunkers to the 140 sand and coquina bunkers. The Conservatory Course was ranked third on Golf Digest's elite list of America's Best New Public Courses in 2008. The Conservatory Course includes nearly 76 acres of man-made lakes and three waterfall features.
