'B'ig Accomplishments
Three Wildcats earned NCAA 'B' cut times during the regular season to qualify to the NCAA Championships. At the TYR Invitational Jordan Wilimovsky swam 'B' cut times of 3:52.24 in the 400 IM and 14:48.94 in the 1,650 free, setting a pool record. He earned another 'B' cut time, swimming a 1,000 split of 8:55.86 during the 1,650 free. At the same meet, Charlie Cole posted a 'B' cut time of 1:37.88 in the 200 free and Will Hofstadter claimed a 'B' cut time of 55.38 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Wilimovsky attained his fourth 'B' cut time against Notre Dame (Jan. 14), swimming the 500 free in 4:18.99, breaking the pool record for the event. All three will be competing in those events at the Big Ten Championships.
Building on Last Year's Experience
The majority of the Wildcats who placed at last year's Championships return to the competition this year. Ten of those competitors were freshmen at the time, and now enter this year's meet with a Big Ten Championships experience and another season under their belts. Northwestern had seven top-10 finishers last year, including five relay teams and two individual performers.
Andrew Jovanovic finished 10th in the 100-back and Andrew Cramer finished 10th in 3 meter diving. Both will compete in the same events this year as seniors. Six of the seven individuals who were apart of the top-10 relay teams return to the Championship this year as well.
Wilimovsky Returns to the Championships
The last time Jordan Wilimovksy competed at the Big Ten Championships was in 2015 when he swam the 1,650 freestyle in 14:33.50, breaking the school record, the Iowa pool record, and earning an NCAA 'A' automatic qualification. He took home the Big Ten Championship in the event, which was Northwestern's first championship since 2008. He missed last year due to Olympic training, but he returned for his senior year.
The Competition
Nine Big Ten universities will compete at the Championships this week. Five of those universities are ranked in the most recent College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) dual meet poll, led by No. 4 Indiana. Michigan (No. 7), Ohio State (No. 18), Minnesota (No. 20) and Wisconsin (No. 22) also appear in the rankings.
