Whalen's 69 Paces Wildcats On Monday In Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico –Senior Andrew Whalen fired a 3-under 69 in Monday's second round to rocket 26 spots up the leaderboard of the 25th Puerto Rico Classic. Whalen is joined in the Top-23 after 36 holes by teammates Ryan Lumsden and Dylan Wu.

Whalen turned in a near-flawless performance in Round 2, with his only bogey coming on his 16th hole of the day. The senior teed off the round on No. 10 and opened with five pars before birdies on the 544-yard, Par-5 No. 15 and the 392-yard, Par-4 No. 17. After the turn he birdied the 422-yard, Par-4 No. 2 and the 338-yard, Par-4 No. 5 on his way to a 69, his third round of the year in the 60's.
"We were better today," head coach David Inglis said after the round. "We made more birdies and we were close to a very good round. Andrew was in control all day and has really developed into a great player. We'll be ready for a good one tomorrow."
Nobody on the Wildcats roster closed Monday stronger than sophomore Sam Triplett, who started his day on the back nine but carded four birdies in a five-hole run from No. 4 to No. 8 down the stretch.
Northwestern will be paired with Big Ten peers Purdue and Ohio State in Tuesday's third and final round, a 7:30 a.m. ET shotgun start at Rio Mar.
