Northwestern will be paired in Sunday's first round with Georgia Tech and Kentucky. Head coach David Inglis' lineup will feature Everton Hawkins, Sam Triplett, Andrew Whalen, Ryan Lumsden and Dylan Wu. The entire field will tee off in a shotgun start at 8 a.m. ET.
Hawkins was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week on Wednesday in recognition of his 3-0 performance and walk-off, title-clinching putt at the Big Ten Match Play Championship. Wu has been the Wildcats top performer in stroke play this season. The junior posted a 70.0 scoring average, a team-best 11 rounds at par-or-better and six rounds in the 60's during the fall schedule. Lumsden is right behind him at 71.85 in 14 rounds over five fall events.
The 2017 field reflects the tournament's reputation as one of the most competitive on the spring calendar, with nine top-50 squads are slated to compete. In addition to the No. 37 Wildcats, the field includes Georgia (13th), Mississippi (19th), Clemson (23rd), North Carolina (24th), Georgia Tech (28th), Purdue (34th), Kentucky (45th), Alabama (47th), North Carolina State (54th), Middle Tennessee State (57th), Ohio State (60th), Virginia Tech (69th), Maryland (81st) and UNC Greensboro (99th).
This year's Puerto Rico Classic marks the 25th annual edition of a tournament that has featured professional golfers such as 2000 champion Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar, Justin Leonard, Stewart Cink, Hunter Mahan, Ben Curtis and Lucas Glover.
This weekend will be the Wildcats 17th all-time appearance at the Classic, including two straight and four in the last five years. The program's top result was a runner-up finish in 2000 led by Donald's individual crown (-9, 207) by three strokes over Watson, and a third-place result by Jess Daley (-5, 211), one stroke ahead of Kuchar. Last year Andrew Whalen was the Wildcats top performer at Rio Mar, firing a 4-under 212 (72-70-70) to earn a share of ninth-place.
