Katsiyiannis' Golden Goal Lifts Northwestern Over Loyola in Double OT, 2-1
10/24/2017 8:03:00 PM | Men's Soccer
EVANSTON, Ill. — First year Tommy Katsiyiannis found the back of the net in the 104th minute to give Northwestern a 2-1 double-overtime victory against crosstown-foe Loyola Tuesday afternoon at Martin Stadium.
The win improves Northwestern to 6-10-0 overall on the campaign and completes a season sweep of the three other Division I men's soccer programs in Chicago. The Wildcats knocked off UIC (1-0; Sept 20) and DePaul (2-0; Oct. 11) earlier this season.
Loyola moves to 6-5-3 overall with loss. Aidian Megally scored the Ramblers' lone goal in the 75th minute with Giann Magno picking up the assist. Evan Konermann made one save in the effort and faced 16 shots.
Sophomore Ty Seager registered his second goal of the season in the 48th minute as the brother duo of Matt and John Moderwell set him up with assists, while Mac Mazzola was credited with the assist on Katsiyiannis' game-winning goal.
Robbie White earned his seventh start in net and tallied nine saves, including a sequence in the 99th minute when he stepped up and made a pair saves on a Loyola penalty kick and the ensuing rebound attempt. The junior has been in net for four of Northwestern's six wins this season.
It was a tale of two halves as Northwestern dominated in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Ramblers by a 7-2 margin. Loyola answered in the second half with 10 shots, five of which were on net.
Northwestern finally broke through in the 48th minute when M. Moderwell played a ball down the sideline to his brother John, who sent a low cross into the box that was headed to the far post by Seager.
The Wildcats held the lead until Magno played a lofty cross into the box from 40 yards out that found the head of Megally and ultimately the back of the net.
Loyola maintained the offensive pressure after tallying the equalizer and drew a foul inside the box in the 81st minute. Loyola's Kyle Thompson took the penalty kick, but it hit off the crossbar and the game remained tied at 1-1.
In the first overtime period, Mazzola recorded the Wildcats' lone opportunity towards net with a shot in the 92 minute that went over the bar.
The Ramblers drew a second penalty in the box in the 99th minute. Grant Stoneman tried to beat White to the right, but White guessed correctly and made the save on the penalty kick and the ensuing rebound.
Northwestern used a counter attack to score the game-winning goal in double overtime.
Mazzola sent a long ball up the middle of the field to a streaking Katsiyiannis, who was joined on a 2-on-2 attack with Seager at the front. Seager made a cut across the field that drew both of Loyola's defenders and allowed Katsiyiannis to go 1-on-1 with the keeper, finishing over his head for the Golden Goal. It was his second game-winning goal of the season.
Northwestern will head to Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 29 for its regular-season finale. Winner of Sunday's game versus the Nittany Lions will earn the No. 7 seed for the Big Ten Tournament. The contest will get underway at 11 a.m. CT.
