EVANSTON, Ill. (February 19, 2026) – Northwestern University head men's soccer coach Russell Payne announced the addition of Joe Moulden to his coaching staff on Thursday. Moulden joins the 'Cats as an assistant coach after spending the previous two seasons in a similar role at his alma mater, Butler University.
"Joe is a talented young coach with tremendous potential," Payne commented. "At his prior programs, Joe's positive impact on character development, recruiting, and attention to detail in all areas of coaching stood out to us. I'm excited to have him join our men's soccer family here at Northwestern."
"It's a pleasure to accept this role as assistant coach at Northwestern University," Moulden said. "I would like to thank Head Coach Russell Payne for this incredible opportunity. I can't wait to work alongside our staff and an outstanding group of student-athletes as we strive for excellence both on and off the field."
Moulden played a primary role in the Bulldogs' recruiting efforts, helping to identify, evaluate, and cultivate relationships with student-athletes. He also took an active role in training design and match preparation.
During his time in the Circle City, Moulden aided in the development of four All-BIG EAST Conference selections, a group highlighted by a pair of Second Team picks in Palmer Ault and Joost de Schutter.
Moulden cut his teeth in the coaching ranks at Georgia Southern University, where he served as an assistant coach from 2020-23. While with the Eagles, he was a vital part in the recruiting efforts for a trio of student-athletes who went on to be selected in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft.
A 2019 alumnus of Butler, Moulden was a fixture along the backline for the Bulldogs, starting in all 76 matches he appeared in during his four-year career. The Bolton, England product enjoyed a decorated junior campaign in 2017, earning Second Team All-BIG EAST distinction, in addition to Third Team All-Great Lakes Region honors from the United Soccer Coaches, as the Bulldogs advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
Moulden received his bachelor's degree in human movement, health science, and education from Butler before adding a master's in kinesiology from Georgia Southern in 2022.
