UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Northwestern battled Penn State in rain-soaked conditions Sunday afternoon in University Park, Pennsylvania, but a Nittany Lion goal in the 67th minute proved to be the difference as the Wildcats fell, 2-1, in the regular-season finale.
Northwestern earned the No. 8 seed in the final Big Ten Conference standings and will face ninth-seeded Rutgers.
"It was a very good game and well played, considering the field and the conditions," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "We took the field with no true seniors because of injury and card accumulation and we gave it everything we had. We have to work on stopping second-chance goals and getting more shots on frame moving forward. I am very proud of our effort and if we continue to battle like that we will be a tough out for someone in the tournament."
Penn State struck first on Sunday in the 18th minute when Callum Pritchatt found Aaron Malloy, who snuck a goal by Robbie White.
Northwestern answered in the 35th minute. Tommy Katsiyiannis sent a left-footed cross into the box and Lynch got his head on the ball, finishing just under the crossbar. It was Lynch's third goal of the campaign.
Robbie White kept the match even with a save in the 62nd minute on a lofty shot that was bound for net. White made four saves on the afternoon and faced 18 shots.
Penn State's Aymar Sigue scored the game-winner in the 67th minute.
The Wildcats had quality chances to pull even in the final minutes, including a Mattias Tomasino shot that hit off the crossbar in the 82nd minute. Northwestern took four shots in the final 10 minutes.
Northwestern held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the Nittany Lions in the second half, 8-6.
