EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern continues its road-heavy start to the Big Ten season Thursday when it travels to Rutgers. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. Central.
The contest is the fourth on the road for the Wildcats in their opening five games of the Big Ten season.
The Wildcats handed Nebraska its first loss of the conference season Sunday, posting a 74-66 victory in Lincoln. Scottie Lindsey scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to lead Northwestern. Vic Law hit his first five 3-point attempts in contributing 15 points.
Scottie Lindsey has scored in double figures in all 17 games this season. It's the most consecutive games with 10+ points for a Northwestern player since John Shurna compiled 22 in a row during the 2011-12 campaign. It's the most consecutive to start a season since Evan Eschmeyer opened the 1998-99 season with 24 straight.
Scottie Lindsey (.913) and Bryant McIntosh (.905) have been exceptional from the charity stripe this season, ranking third and fourth, respectively, in the Big Ten in free throw percentage. In conference play, the duo has combined to hit on 27 of their 28 attempts (.964).
Northwestern leads its all-time series with Rutgers, 6-1, including winning both matchups since the Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten. NU won last year's matchup 98-59 Feb. 27 in Evanston. The 39-point margin of victory was the largest for the 'Cats in a Big Ten game since 1944 while their 33 assists set a program record.
Scouting Rutgers
The Scarlet Knights (11-6, 0-4) enjoyed a solid nonconference portion of their season under first-year head coach Steve Pikiell but the team is still seeking its first Big Ten win. Rutgers is coming off a 68-62 loss at Iowa on Sunday despite leading by nine midway through the second half. Deshawn Freeman led the Scarlet Knights with 19 points and 13 rebounds against Iowa and is averaging 11.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Nigel Johnson is first on the team with an average of 12.1 points per contest. Rutgers leads the league with an average of 15.2 offensive rebounds per game.
