STILLWATER, Okla. - The ninth-seeded Wildcats opened first-round action at the NCAA Stillwater, Oklahoma, Regional Championships with a 12-over 300 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club. That score puts Northwestern in third place; eight strokes behind second-place Oklahoma, the tournament's No. 3 seed.
Top-seeded Oklahoma State leads the tournament after shooting 3-under 285.
"We really hung in there today and played a solid round," said head coach David Inglis. "Dylan [Wu] played great and I am pleased to see Sam [Triplett] and Ryan [Lumsden] step up and play a solid round when we really needed it. We are on the cusp of playing great and just need a good response tomorrow."
Sophomore Dylan Wu, a second-team All-Big Ten honoree, sits second overall in the individual standings after firing a 2-under 70. Wu birdied five holes in the opening round, including three on the back nine and is just two strokes off the individual lead.
Freshman Ryan Lumsden also sits among the field's top 15 at 1-over 73, courtesy of bookend birdies. Sophomore Sam Triplett, who also started the day with a birdie on the 542-yard No. 1, closed out round one at 5-over 77 for 28th overall.
Inglis' lineup in the 5-count-4 format at Karsten Creek GC features two seniors, two sophomores and a freshman. The Wildcats' competition in the 14-team field includes four teams ranked in the top-20 of the Golfstat rankings, and four more in the top-50.
The Wildcats continue Regional play tomorrow at 8:20 a.m. CST, and will be paired with August and Big Ten foe Purdue.
The top five teams will advance to the NCAA National Championships later this month in Eugene, Ore.
